Flow vs Other L1s Pt (II)

    Will they ever come back?

    0. What is Flow?

Flow was created by Dapper Labs, the team behind NBA Topshot, but it is actually because of their experience with Crypto Kitties and the problems they faced with Ethereum that the team decided to build a blockchain optimized for NFTs. They built Flow, a proof of stake blockchain designed for NFTs and crypto gaming.

    1. Dashboard Objectives

A way to measure the health of a blockchain is by looking at its user retention, i.e., whether users are repeatedly interacting with it in contrast to using it just once. On this dashboard, we will assess the user retention of the Flow blockchain and compare it with other Layer one blockchains, these being Ethereum and Solana.

    How do we do this?

We have selected the users transacting on June 1st, 2022 as our sample. We then study for these users the transactions they have done in the following weeks. Before diving into the deeper analysis, we first show the percentage of users that have transacted at least once at least a week after the transaction on June 1st and at least a month after it.

The user retention for Ethereum and Solana is very similar. Also, more than half of the users have transacted after a week of their first transaction, and a quarter has transacted after a month.

Interestingly, the user retention of Flow is almost half of that of Ethereum and Solana.

    Flow

After the first transaction, the daily recurring number of users immediately drops to less than 10% of the 60K initial sample.

The recurring number of users stays almost consistent throughout the following weeks. That is until July 13th, after which we see little to no recurring users.

    Ethereum

The day after the recurring number of daily users immediately drops to around 30% of the initial sample of 330K.

In the first 10 days the number of recurring users slowly decreases.

After that, the recurrence behavior is almost the same 11 days or a month after the first transaction.

    Solana

Almost 50% of the users transacted on June 2nd.

In the case of Solana, we do see the number of recurring users decrease over time.

    3. Takeaways

    • Flow has room for improvement in terms of user retention. Some users are coming back to the network, but not as many as those in Ethereum and Solana.
    • Although overall the retention of Ethereum and Solana looks very similar, on a daily basis we see that Ethereum quickly drops down to 30% that amount is almost sustained over time, while in Solana the recurring users consistently decrease after each day.
