• Analyze the NBA Conference Finals (May 17th- May 29th) and determine whether it had an impact on NBA Top Shot's volume.
• Did the Warriors, Celtics, Mavericks, or Heat see higher sales volume?

Methodology:

• Utilize Flipside Flow Core Tables to extract data:
  • fact_nft_sales sales
  • fact_prices prices
  • dim_topshot_metadata
• Define Conference Finals data date and extend +/- 30 days to provide comparison.
• Identify top collections.
• Identify team/player data within time and collection constraints.

Did the NBA Conference Finals have an impact on NBA Top Shot's volume?⤵️

Did the Warriors, Celtics, Mavericks, or Heat see higher sales volume?⤵️

🗝️ Points:

• Looking at the Conference Finals with an additional 30 days +/- time-period, we do not find a strong impact on sales or USD volume.
• While the data covers all Top Shot collections, we observe that the run up to the conference finals was a busier time on the platform.
• We do observe a spike in USD volume at the outset of the conference finals, perhaps in an expectation to predict the winner.

🗝️ Points:

• During the Conference Finals we do observe that sales are dominated by the ‘2022 NBA Playoffs’ collection.
• In the 30 days after (and during the finals), we observe the collection continues its position, with the base set picking up traction from the conference period.

🗝️ Points:

• Limiting our results to the ‘2022 NBA Playoffs’ collection and conference finals time-period, we do find our top teams leading sales.

• As a Milwaukee native, I was pleased to see the Bucks rounding out the top 5 😃.

• We also observe the top players, with Reggie Bullock of the Mavericks taking the top spot.
• Surprisingly, the Celtics (top 3 by team) only had one player taking a high number of sales.

🗝️ Points:

• Zooming in on our top teams and the conference dates themselves, we find some indecision early, culminating on the 22nd. Starting on the 25th the Mavericks decidedly take the lead in interest.

• Let’s have a look at the conference finals results ⤵️

• We find that on the 25th, our spike in Warriors sales coincides with their first loss in the series…maybe a show of support and good luck by fans?

🕵️ Conclusion:

• While we did not observe an impact on overall sales or USD volume during the conference, we did find significant interest in the playoffs collection.
• Seeing a decrease in volume going into the finals, indicates fans may get more excited during the run-up, and as teams are eliminated, certain fans may abandon purchases for the season as their favorite teams are eliminated.
• However, everyone loves a winner and the Warriors are no exception, leading the NFT sales volume and eventually taking a 4-2 victory over the Celtics in the finals.
• Headquartered in Boston, Flipside Crypto may have shed some tears this year….better luck next year, guys!
