Let's look into stablecoin data on Algorand

Chart some metrics on the total supply of stablecoins on Algorand. 1. What is the total monthly transaction volume for stablecoins on Algorand? 2. What are the most popular stablecoins monthly? 3. How much of the total stablecoin supply on Algorand is being lent or borrowed? [Not Included in this investigation] 4. How has the impact of UST’s depeg affected the flow of funds in and out of various stablecoins on Algorand?

What is the total monthly transaction volume for stablecoins on Algorand?

Let's first look at monthly then daily...

    Introduction

In this investigation, I am attempting to capture as many stablecoins as possible using Algorand Assets and this list as sources. I may not capture all stablecoin currencies, but I at least tried to capture as many USD and EUR denominations as possible.

Also, note that because I am new to Algorand tables I am not sure now to get lending-borrowing for these assets yet, thus I've focused on the other 3 questions.

What we can see from the following is that the "top" of all stablecoin usage on the Algorand network was on November 2021 ever since it has slowly decreased. The month of May, even incomplete until now (May 30th), seems to have already passed the 2nd local maximum in terms of transaction count. As we can speculate this is probably coming from the collapse of UST and people fleeing the algo-stables or even collateralized stablecoin market.

We can see a similar thing on the daily, but what is also apparent is that these spikes in early 2021 come from 1-2 day transaction volume and differ from that post-October which seem to be sustained. We can also see on this view that the collapse of UST has caused one spike on May 9-13th but there's another one on May 29-30th which I cannot reason about. Potentially in anticipation of this?

By looking at the first graph in this investigation we can see that the most popular stablecoins are USDT, USDC and RIO amongst others. The first two are what everyone is using in DeFi or otherwise, issued by Tether and Circle accordingly, whereas RIO is issued by Realio.

How has the impact of UST’s depeg affected the flow of funds in and out of various stablecoins on Algorand?

Even though the above is not an inflows/outflows graph with volume in $, it can give us a proxy of what took place during and after the collapse of UST. We can see an increase in the volume of transactions (count) on and around May 9-14th. This is most probably correlated to fear in the market, people moving their stablecoins out from x stablecoin to y stablecoin or even from x stablecoin to an exchange and then into FIAT money of their choice.

What is interesting, and probably unrelated to UST collapse is the spike now on the 29-30th of May which is probably related to some other event and could be an inflow rather than an outflow.

    Summary

In this investigation, we looked at the transaction volume (count) of a subset of stablecoins on Algorand. We also investigated how that transaction volume (count) has increased or decreased periodically and how the de-pegging event of UST affected it.

    Evaluation

A more complete investigation would've looked at inflows/outflows and how they changed with time.
