What makes a Top Shots moment valuable? (Part I)
Those being Layup and Dunk plays
But this come with a tradeoff, now 2 pointers and mid-range play types are out of the comparison, but we get a closer definition to what is more likely driving sells.
So, hijacking the premise, instead of just focusing on play types, ==now we will be looking for categorys== and in those, the three most preferred are:
- Layup
- Dunk
- 3 Pointer
TopShot
The top selling nft collection in the entire Flow ecosystem will now be under the magnifier to see what do buyers look for when buying their own TopShot nfts.
Task
- Create an analysis on NBA Top Shots moments and attempt to uncover any correlations between a specific category and sales volume.
- Focus specifically on the play_type column.
- What play types do users hold most?
- How much volume in sales do these play_types generate?
- Include any other transactional metrics you can think of.
Method
To find sales and nfts metadata, Flipside’s next data tables will be used:
flow.core.fact_nft_sales
to find overall sales and volume.flow.core.dim_topshot_metadata
to find each nfts metadata.
Limitation
- This analysis while great to have an impression of how TopShot sales move around, might be heavily biased.
- Flipside’s Topshot Metadata is not up to date with most of the bigger sales, making impossible to retrieve their particular characteristics, for example the most sold nft doesn’t appear in Metadata’s table.
- This analysis will present a smaller population size.
TopShot
Its not the most sold one
I know, we all love a good twist.
Thankfully DUC its the flow stablecoin equivalent making the analysis that straightforward.
In USD volume:
- 3 Pointer with 1.7 millions worth of USD.
- Dunk with 1.66 millions worth.
- Layup with 1.36 millions.
- Assist with 1.15 millions.
- Block with 1.03 millions.
- Jump Shot with 690k.
- Steal with 338k.
- Handles with 309k.
In Flow volume
- Jump Shot with 44.1 Flow volume.
- Dunk with 1.9 Flow volume.
- Assist with 1 Flow.
- Layup with 0.997.
Now, consider that this is subjected to Metadata’s table being half full, so i only considered this because the data was present.
Added Bonus metrics. let me addem they are right here for the love of god-
Top preferred player
- Draymond Green with 7443 nft sales with his existence on.
- Steph Curry with 7255.
- Spencer Dinwiddie with 5405.
- LeBron James with 5368.
- LaMelo Ball with 5131.
- Jonathan Kuminga with 5000.
- Darius Garland with 4929.
- Aleksej Pokusevski with 4779.
- Jayson Tatum with 4727.
- Reffie Bullock with 4615
But, amount of sales with their faces is not all what matters.
How about, how much people have spent on them?
Thanks to the ordering option we can actually see that the highest paid players are not necessarily those that are being sold the most.
- Magic Jhonson, for example, has 600 nft sold, but amount the biggest money bringer with 579k worth in USD by himself.
- Steph Curry, with 460k USD worth.
- Scottie Barnes with 273k.
- Paul George with 220k.
- Draymon Green with 218k.
- Klay Thompson with 212k.
- Luka Dončić with 191k.
- Jayson Tatum with 191k
- Joel Embiid with 172k.
- Anthony Edwards162k.
So not every high frequency seller its guarantee to move money around.
Its the Golden State Warriors, in amount of sales and $ volume
So, it goes like this:
- Golden State Warriors with 37.6k nfts sold.
- Boston Celtics with 24.4k nfts sold.
- Dallas Mavericks with 21.8k.
- Miami Heat with 20.2k.
- Milwaukee Bucks with 16.7k.
- Memphis Grizzlies with 12.98k.
- Phidelphia 76ers with 12.6k.
- Phoenix Suns with 12.66k.
- Denver Nuggets with 12.62k.
- Brooklyn Nets with 8.8k.
And in cash?
It doesn’t change that much, except for Los Angeles Lakers, being in 17 place in amount of sales, in USD worth, they are second with 820k worth in sales.
And the Toronto Raptors.
All the others somewhat align with their placement in amount of NFT sold.
Topshot
TopShot
Its Holo Icons! at least in $ volume
And it was really close.
The top seller it’s without a doubt the 2022 NBA Playoffs series.
But in USD worth in sales, the Holo Icons series take the lead.
The top five best performers in USD volume are:
- Holo Icon with 2.1 millions.
- 2022 NBA Playoffs with 2.09 millions.
- Metallic Gold Le with 1.22 millions.
- And Then There Were Four with 582k.
- The Anthology: Magic Johnson.
2021-22 by far. I mean, f$%k
And well, that disparity certainly does not help the analysis.
Lets try this, TOP five:
- 2021-22 season with 257k sales.
- 2022 season with 30k sales.
- 2008 season with 22.8k sales.
- 2021 season with 4.4k sales.
- 2019 season with 567 sales.
And in $ Volume?
- 2021-22 season with 6.9 millions.
- 2022 season with 330k.
- 2008 season with 291k.
- 1987-88 season with 249k.
- 1979-90 season with 209k.
And that seems highly unlikely. At least giving that he is 62 years old, doesn’t plays for the Golden State Warriors, or any team at all.
But at least we know to look for 3 pointers, dunks or layouts type of plays.
And if those are Holo Icons, ==oh boy sweet money
> # So, which one to choose? > > Well, I would try to go for a Holo Icon, 3 pointer by Magic Johnson while playing for the Golden State Warriors
