Optimism DEXs

Q8. Let’s take a closer look at DEXs on Optimism, specifically Velodrome. Make a dashboard that compares Velodrome to any other Optimism DEX.

    Introduction

This dashboard contains a comparison of three DEXs found on Optimism: Velodrome, Uniswap and ZipSwap. I will investigate the following metrics:

    • The daily swap count and the daily unique swappers count on all three DEXs.

    • The total swap count and the total unique swappers count on all three DEXs.

    • What are the most popular asset pairs to swap from and to by looking at the

top 10 tokens swapped to/from for all three DEXs.

    A few words on methodology

    • In order to decide which DEXs to compare against Velodrome, I looked at all of the DeFi apps built on Optimism. I initially wanted to compare Uniswap, SushiSwap and Velodrome, however, I quickly realised how painful it is to find the correct contract addresses. In the case of Uniswap, there are two contract addresses that contain most (if not all) of the transactions, so this was not a problem. However, in the case of SushiSwap, there is not a singular contract that would route all of the transactions, there are only pool addresses which means I would have to manually find them and include in my query, which I have decided not to do - as it could result in incomplete analysis in case of missing out on certain pool addresses. Therefore, this dashboard includes the analysis for three DEXs found on Optimism: Velodrome, Uniswap and ZipSwap - which are shown as the top three Optimism DEXes on DexScreener.
    • Optimism tables are still in the process of backfilling - this dashboard contains all of the data from the 15th of June 2022, which at the time of writing is the earliest backfilled day.

    Key points:

    • UniSwap overtakes Velodrome by quite a lot when it comes to the total counts of swap transactions and unique swappers. We can see that on a daily basis there are more swaps executed on UniSwap - what is interesting is that there is a direct correlation between the two platforms. We can see that if there is a spike in the Velodrome swap transactions, there is also a spike in UniSwap’s swap transactions, and this also applies to the daily count of unique swappers, but not to the same order of magnitude.
    • ZipSwap has seen the least number of swap transactions or unique swappers - we can see that it only accounts for about 1.5% of the total swap count and only about 0.02% of the total unique swappers - which is very little!

Finally, time for ==ZipSwap== - since there are not that many transactions executed on ZipSwap in the past month, I will look at the top 5 assets instead of top 10.

    Key points:

    • I have decided to assess which assets are the most popular by looking at the number of transactions. I could have also judged which assets are the most popular by looking at the count of unique swappers or the amounts transacted, however, I thought that this dashboard would be too messy if I included all of this information. Furthermore, in the case of amounts transacted, it’s not easy to spot whales - we could see one asset having the most volume, which could lead us to the conclusion that it is the most popular one - and this would be a mistake. I have come to the conclusion that the number of transactions is the fairest way to judge the popularity of a token.
    • What we can see above is that on Velodrome and UniSwap similar tokens are popular. We can see that both platforms like to bridge USDC on Hop, as well as ETH. It is also interesting to see that the Optimism token is very popular on Velodrome, but not as popular on UniSwap.
    • When it comes to ZipSwap, again USDC and ETH on Hop are the most popular assets, followed by the Optimism Token.
    • Overall, it is very interesting to see how similar the rank in the top assets swapped TO and FROM is similar - and this applies to all three platforms!

    Conclusion

There is not much more to say than to conclude this analysis - we have seen the fundamental metrics, such as the daily swap count and the daily unique swappers count on all three DEXs on Optimism: Velodrome, UniSwap and ZipSwap. We have also investigated the total values found on these platforms - keeping in mind that all data is from the 15th of June 2022. Lastly, we have seen what are the most popular assets swapped to/from for all three DEXs, by looking at the total number of transactions executed on each DEX.
