4. Stablecoin Popularity
Create a visualization comparing USDC, USDT, and UST (wormhole) usage in transactions throughout the month of January. Has UST seen more adoption in the Solana ecosystem this month? How do you expect this trend to continue? Why?
First of all, we will take the daily data from January 1st 2022 until today to get an overview of the metrics over time. Then, we will extract the total number of transactions done by each stablecoin in order to compare how many transactions are done involving each of them. Take into account that we will count only those transactions where the stablecoin appears as "post_mint" indicates that the specific stablecoin is involved in the final output. Finally, to answer the question about the adoption of UST, we will compare the percentage of transactions per stablecoin.
Taking a look at the first chart about daily transactions, we can see how the number of USDC and USDT transactions remained constant during first days of January around 0.5M daily for USDC and 0.3M daily for USDT. Then, during January 23rd and 24th the number of transactions in both cases increased a lot, basically were doubled. And now, it seems that during last days the number are starting to fall again. However, in the case of UST it cannot be appreciate in the chart due to high difference in numbers respect to other stablecoins. However, if we take a look at the second chart, I have plotted the same but putting the UST number of transactions in the right y-axis to be able to analyze the trends. The results show that the UST daily trend is different, in this case, there is an uptrend from the start to the end, where the number of daily transactions have been multiplied by six from 500 to around 3k. Then, this is the first signal found about the increase of UST adoption during last month in Solana ecosystem.
But now, we will take a look at the third chart about the percentage of the number of transactions done involving each stablecoin. In this chart, we can see how the percentage didnt' vary so much. Around 60% of the transactions have involved USDC and 40% USDT. The percentage of UST is very small and cannot be appreciated. In this case, I have done the same again. I have plotted the percentage daily line for each stablecoin, putting the UST percentage in the y-axis to be compared against others. Taking a look at it, we can see while, as previously commented, USDC and USDT percentage remained constant, the UST percentage dramatically increased during first mid-January, and then remained constant during second mid-January, passing from 0.05% of the total transactions to around 0.25%, and achieving 0.38% at some days.
It is clear that the trends are there. We have seen how in all of the metrics analyzed, the UST shows a better trend than others. While USDC and USDT remained constant during last month, the UST have been increasing and it seems like it could continue during this year because of some reasons:
- UST is a new stablecoin that is still being adopted
- UST is a Terra native stablecoin, one o the main crypto ecosystems that has had a massive adoption during last months and seems that this adoption dind't finish yet.
- And as well, because of the bridge between Terra UST and Solana UST it's relatively in its beggining. For this reason, the number of transactions involving this stablecoin have been increasing and it will continue during next months for sure.
