Cost vs Profit
Question 43: Of the people (addresses) who have started providing liquidity to the pools since 2021, how many have left the platform without breaking even (considering the gas fees). Can we say something about their profile?
Introduction
In finance, the break-even point (BEP) is the point at which costs or expenses and revenues are equal: there is no net profit or loss, and "break-even" has been "achieved". No profit or loss has been made, although opportunity costs have been "paid" and capital has received the expected risk-adjusted return.
In this dashboard, we will study how many users have left the platform without breaking even from those who started their journey since 2021. Furthermore, we will study as well their profile.
Methodology
To carry out the task, we will which users have started to providing liquidity to Sushiswap pools since 2021 through Ethereum dex_swaps table. Afterthat, we will compute the total amount out and the total amount in per user and we will do the rest about both values to obtain the net received amount. To be able to calculate the percentage of users without break even, I have grouped the users by:
- Profit users: those who received more than 2% in gains (volume out is higher than volume in)
- Cost users: those who lost more than 2% in cost (volume out is lower than volume in)
- No break-even users: those who received a difference lower than -2 or 2%.
At the final point, I have calculated some metrics between these groups and compare them to see if there are an specific group of users who left the pools without break even.
Since the beginning of 2021, the total users who started their journey on Sushiswap liquidity pools and left it are 992.
Among these users, we will carry out the analysis splitting the depending on their costs or profits.
The total number of users who left the pools with more than 2% in gains are 48, with a ratio of 0.0484, which represents a 4.84% of the total users.
The total users who left the pools with more than 2% in costs are 504, representing a 0.508 ratio which is equal to a 50.8% of them.
Finally, the users who we are searching for, those who left without break even are 440, which is a 44.4% of the total users. Take into account that we selected the users who left the pools no losing nor gaining more than 2% of the total volume moved in the pools, because of in my opinion is like their capital is similar as their initial capital.
Finally, in order to compare the groups and see if there are some important aspects to highlight about the users who left the pools without break-even, I calculated the average volume moved in pools, the average swap size, as well as the average number of transactions.
As we can see in the chart above, there is a big difference between each group of users.
- On the one hand, we have those users who left the pools losing money. This type of users are users who interact a lot with the platform, doing more than 8.7k transacionts in average per user and moving more than 275M USD. However, the average swap size is the lower one with around 30k USD.
- On the other hand, we have those users who left the pools gaining money, who are a type of users who moved an average of 40M, less than the other group and do an average of 1.8k transactions and an average swap size around 93k USD.
- Finally, the users who left the pools without break-even are those who move an average volume of 53M, pretty similar to the users who left with gains, however, the big difference resides in the other metrics. In this case, the average number of transactions are so lower than in the other groups, being 772. ANd the average swap size is so higher in comparison, with almost 400k USD in average.
Conclusion
In this dashboard, we have seen that more than 44% of the users who joined the Sushiswap pools since 2021 and left at some point, have left the pools without break-even, which is a lot. Besides, we have seen that the type of users who did it are an exclusive type of users who interact less tha other users with the platform doing an average of 772 transactions and moving around 53M USD in volume. As well, this type of users are people that have an average swap size higher than others.
