Findings

• Most of the APE was claimed on the first day of the airdrop at almost 100M APE.

• Similarly, most users also claimed on the first day. This suggests that the airdrop was well-marketed and hyped.

• When looking at the relationship between the price of the APE token and the number of APE claimed, we can see that the price of APE increased quickly on the day most users claimed their APE.

  This is interesting as usually an airdrop usually means a lot of selling pressure on the token. However, as the price increased rather than decreased suggests that most users did not sell their airdropped APE on the first day.

Introduction

What is the APE token?

ApeCoin (APE) is an ERC-20 governance token compliant with the Ethereum network. ApeCoin will become the primary token for new products and services launched by Yuga Labs, the same group that created the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT project, a popular non-fungible token (NFT) project built on the Ethereum network. ApeCoin will also be accepted within the Benji Bananas video game, built by Animoca Brands. (source)

The APE airdrop

On March 17th 2022, APE conducted an airdrop. 150 million tokens (24.2% of the Ecosystem Fund and 15% of the total supply of ApeCoin) were claimable by BAYC and MAYC NFT holders upon launch of ApeCoin. (source)

APE staking

Recently, on December 5th, users we able to start staking the APE token among 4 different pools . Holders can stake their APE tokens or Bored Ape/Mutant Ape NFTs on ApeStake.io to start earning rewards on Dec. 12. According to the company’s website, 96.2 million $APE (worth around $391 million as of writing) has been allocated as a reward for users who participate in staking. (source)

Data about the APE airdrop was collected using the table ethereum.core.fact_event_logs in combination with the contract address of the airdrop: 0x025c6da5bd0e6a5dd1350fda9e3b6a614b205a1f .

The price data for the APE token was collected using the ethereum.core.fact_hourly_token_prices with token_address = '0x4d224452801aced8b2f0aebe155379bb5d594381' .

Finally, data for APE staking was collected using the table ethereum.core.fact_event_logs and origin_to_address = '0x5954ab967bc958940b7eb73ee84797dc8a2afbb9' . We identity the different pools using when origin_function_signature = '0x46583a05' then 'BAYC Pool'

APE activity after the airdrop

In this section, we provide some metrics on the behavior of the wallets after receiving the wallets and some information on how much each wallet claimed.

Findings

• Most airdrop claimers have sold their APE, or at least are not holding it anymore in their claiming wallet.
• Wallet 0x54be3a has claimed the most APE at around 1.4M
• Most wallets claimed between 1000 and 2500 APE. However, also a substantial number of wallets (around a third) claimed between 10k and 25k in the airdrop.

APE Staking

In this section, we provide some metrics about staking APE. We also compare the the different pools in term of APE staked, number of stakers, and number of staking transactions.

Findings

• A total of over 14M APE has been staked across pools
• There have been almost 2.2k unique stakers
• In terms of number of staking transactions and number of stakers, the $APE only pool is currently the largest.
• In terms of the total amount of APE staked, the BAYC pool is the largest.
• The APE only accounts for 37% of the staking transactions and 42% of the number of stakers
• The BAYC accounts for 46% of all the staked APE.
