NEAR holding distribution
Holder group NEAR Transfers
What is a Layer 1?
Layer 1 is the main blockchain network in charge of on-chain transactions, while Layer 2 is the connected network in charge of off-chain transactions. The Bitcoin network is Layer 1. It offers an abysmal speed of five to seven transactions per second (tps).
What are smart contracts?
A smart contract is a computer program or a transaction protocol that is intended to automatically execute, control or document legally relevant events and actions according to the terms of a contract or an agreement.
What is NEAR?
Near Protocol is a layer 1 blockchain network. It provides a platform on which developers can build decentralized applications (dapps). The most successful layer 1 blockchain is Ethereum, so protocols like Near are seen as challengers.
Methodology
In this dashboard we are looking to see how the NEAR tokens are distributed amongst users of the blockchain. In addition, we are looking to see how different user groups in terms of NEAR holdings interact with the blockchain. The data for this dashboard will come from the near.core.fact_transfers and near.core.fact_transactions tables of Flipsides database. The NEAR data starts in August 2021, so this dashboard will look at net balance change since that point.

Holder group Transactions
Observations
- Users holding between 10 and 100 NEAR tokens are the most active group of users in terms of users and transaction volume
- Users holding between 10 and 100 NEAR make about 66% of all NEAR transactions and 33% of transaction volume
- In terms of volume users holding over 1 million NEAR make up 3% of the transfers, but 31.5% of the transfer volume on the chain
- Wallets with over 1 million near make up around 40% of all transactions on the chain
Conclusion
- NEAR holding distribution
- Only 15 NEAR wallets have over 1 million NEAR, but these users have over 91 million NEAR tokens
- Almost 90% of all near wallets have less than 10 NEAR
- There is a huge difference between the mean and median NEAR tokens holding
- The largest NEAR holder has over 20 million tokens
