Overview

Metamask is one of The World's Leading Crypto Wallets. with its mobile App and web extensions it's the main choice of users for having a wallet in Ethereum and its L2 chains.

In this dashboard I will try to answer the following questions about Metamask wallets:

• How many total Metamask wallet holders are there?

• What’s the average value of ETH held in wallets?

• What percentage of wallets are engaging in a higher order activity, like staking?

Since there is no on chain data to find the Metamask wallets, we have to use the Swap feature of Metamask and find the wallets that have engaged with swap feature of Metamask. It should be noted that with this method all Metamask wallets will not be counted.

Results

Without considering date, from the begining of data, how many Metamask wallets do we have?

The total number of Metamask wallets must be much higher, because all wallets don't engage with swap feature.

Let's find data from other sources:

according to https://etherscan.io/chart/address there are near 200 million ETH addresses.

On average, 0.916 ETH are held by each Metamask wallet. also this number is found by according to wallets engaged with swap feature of Metamask not all of them, but it can be a good estimate for he whole ETH held in Metamask wallets.

with respect to 20 million Metamask wallets, it can be concluded that there are around 20 million ETH held in Metamask wallets.

First I should note that, in the table of ethereum.erc20_balances there were some huge balances that don't seem to be rational, that all of them are neglected.

The biggest whale of Metamask has around 20K ETH. so the Metamask wallets have ETH between 0 and 20K.

Now we have 1.27 million sample of total Metamask wallets, actually those engaged with its swap feature. it will be interesting to see how much ETH do they hold in their Metamask wallets?

I choose two parameters: the average amount held by wallets and the maximum amount held by a wallet.

Since Balance is a dynamic feature varying day by day. wallets may sell or buy ETH to each other. I choose a day and will find two mentioned metrics on this specific day.

the day can be selected in the board parameters.

Not all of these ETH addresses are Metamask wallets. I searched web to find a number of Metamask wallets and according to this https://earthweb.com/metamask-statistics/, there are around 20 million monthly Metamask wallets.

The above number is around 6 percent of 20 million mentioned in the above article. It means that Metamask wallets don't engage with its swap feature very often and prefer to use other platform for swapping maybe because of higher fee of Metamask swap feature.

So the above number can't be a good estimate for total number of Metamask wallets. and it's better to say that: There are 1.27 million wallets engaged with swap feature of Metamask.

staking

As an example for high order activity, I choose staking ETH to LIDO finance. since the Ethereum is proof of work not proof of stake, there is no ordinary staking procedure like other chains.

In lido finance, you can stake ETH and receive stETH. The ETH which is staked is also locked and can be redeemed after ETH chain converts to proof of stake.

participating in staking ETH to Lido can be a sign of high activity and fully accommodation of a wallet to ETH ecosystem

we had 1.27 million Metamask wallets used the swap feature of Metamask. from them 10.64K wallets staked ETH to Lido. it's 0.8% of Metamask wallets. they are not so active in staking ETH to Lido.

Conclusion

There are around 1.27 million Metamask wallets used its swap feature. there are around 200 million Eth addresses and 20 million Metamask wallets.

Metamask wallets engaged with its swap feature, has 0.91 ETH on average per wallets. the maximum amount held by a wallet is around 20K ETH. this numbers change over time.
