FLOW Usage During the NBA Playoffs
FLOW Usage During the NBA Playoffs
Introduction: Goal is to determine whether the NBA Conference Finals (May 17th- May 29th) had an impact on NBA Top Shot's volume, and whether the teams competing, Warriors, Celtics, Mavericks, or Heat, had elevated volumes of sales.
Conclusion: While Top Shots account for 75% of Flow NFT sales, the NBA Conference Finals did not cause a net lift in Top Shot sales. However, during the playoffs a greater percentage of Top Shots NFTs sold were Conference Final teams.
Method: First looked at overall volume of NFT sales on Flow, then compared Top Shots vs. non-Top Shots. Finally, dug into Conference Finals teams. NFT sales in Flow were determined using the “flow.core.fact_nft_sales” table and teams were determined using the “flow.core.dim_topshot_metadata” table, which 80% of Top Shot sales were missing. NFT sales were determined by count the distinct tx_id in the “flow.core.fact_nft_sales” table.
While 75% of Flow NFT sales are Top Shot, there was NOT a noticeable lift in NBA Top Shot sales during the NBA Playoffs in May and June.
Conference Finals teams accounted for a greater percentage of NFT sales during the NBA playoffs. in May and June.
Most NFT sales are missing Team data because the NFTs are not in the dim_topshot_metadata table. This should be further investigated as it could cause bias in data.
Most of the top players were in the Conference Finals. Interestingly Reggie Bullock has most sales by far AND there was a large spike in Mavericks NFT sales on 5/25, which could be related.
Several large spikes for Golden State, including when they won on June 16th. Also, interesting spikes in both Boston and Golden State a week of so after the finals ended in late June.
