    INTRODUCTION

    Polygon is a Layer 2 scaling solution built on top of the Ethereum blockchain, which utilizes a Proof-of Stake consensus mechanism to address issues of blockchain scalability as seen on the Ethereum network.

    As seen with other blockchains, blockchain performance of Polygon can be tested by using timestamps investigate the number of blocks created, validated and added to each peer node on the Polygon Blockchain during a defined period of time, in an immutable way. This is also known as blocktime ( the time between blocks) and can be used to assess the scalability of the platform.

    In this analysis, we look at Polygon blocktime metric to determine the minimum blocktime, maximum blocktime and average blocktime it takes to complete transactions on Polygon. We also compare it to other Layer 1 and Layer 2 solutions to assess and benchmark against competitors Flow and Osmosis.

    FLOW is a Layer 1 blockchain with a proof of take consensus mechanism.

    Arbitrum is a Layer 2 scaling solution built on top of Ethereum , just like Polygon. It uses ‘optimistic rollups’ technology to scale transactions by transfering messages to and from smart contracts on Ethereum L1 and its own L2 blockchain.

    The minimum on Polygon is blocktime is 2 seconds, while the maximum blocktime is 168 seconds. On average the blocktime is 2.25. The average transaction cost per block is 74.8. transactions.

    The minimum time between blocks is 2 second while the average blocktime is 27 seconds and the average blocktime is 2.27 seconds.

    Hence, taking in this information to account, on average 74.8*2.27 =169.79 transactions are completed between blocks.

    POLYGON VS OSMOSIS VS FLOW

    In comparison to other similar blockchains; Flow and Polygon, we see that Flow and Arbitrum have the lowest ‘minimum blocktime’ at 0 seconds then Polygon at 2 seconds.

    On the opposite end of the spectrum, Flow has the highest recorded maximum blocktime between blocks at 52.77k seconds followed by Arbitrum at 19.42 seconds and Polygon at 27 seconds.

    On average, Polygon has the highest blocktime per second with 2.27 seconds between two blocks on average while flow has an average of 1.49 seconds and Arbitrum 1.1 seconds between blocks.
