Polygon Block Performance

What is the average time between blocks on Polygon? What was the maximum and minimum recorded time between two blocks? How many transactions are done in a block on average? How do these numbers compare to L1 such as Flow or Solana, or other L2 such as Arbitrum or Optimism?

In this dashboard, we will look at the following things:

    • The average, median, minimum and maximum recorded time between two blocks on Polygon, Flow, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism and Ethereum networks respectively in the past 30 days.
    • The average, median, minimum and maximum transactions done in a block on Polygon, Flow, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism and Ethereum networks respectively in the past 30 days.
    • The daily average, median, minimum and maximum recorded time between two blocks and the daily average, median, minimum and maximum transactions done in a block on Polygon, Flow, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism and Ethereum networks respectively in the past 30 days.

The above charts show the average, median, minimum and maximum transactions done in a block on Polygon, Flow, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism and Ethereum networks respectively in the past 30 days.

The average transactions done in a block from highest to lowest are as follows:

    1. Solana with average of 2120 transactions per block
    2. Ethereum with average of 182 transactions per block
    3. Polygon with average of ~72 transactions per block
    4. Flow with average of ~15 transactions per block
    5. Arbitrum with average of ~1.15 transactions per block
    6. Optimism with average of 1 transactions per block

Thus average transactions done in a block on Polygon are higher than Flow, Arbitrum and Optimism but lower than Solana and Ethereum.

The above charts show the average, median, minimum and maximum recorded time between two blocks on Polygon, Flow, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism and Ethereum networks respectively in the past 30 days.

The average time between 2 blocks from fastest to slowest are as follows:

    1. Solana with average time of 0.716 seconds
    2. Arbitrum with average time of 0.932 seconds
    3. Optimism with average time of 0.96 seconds
    4. Flow with average time of 1.403 seconds
    5. Polygon with average time of 2.27 seconds
    6. Ethereum with average time of 13.83 seconds

Thus we can see that the average time between blocks on Polygon is less than Ethereum but greater than Solana, Arbitrum, Optimsim and Flow.

The maximum and minimum recorded time between two blocks are as follows:

    • Polygon : Minimum 2 seconds and maximum 25 seconds
    • Flow : Minimum 0 seconds and maximum 90 seconds
    • Solana : Minimum 0 seconds and maximum 23 seconds
    • Arbitrum : Minimum 0 seconds and maximum 647 seconds
    • Optimism : Minimum 0 seconds and maximum 46 seconds
    • Ethereum : Minimum 1 seconds and maximum 163 seconds

The above charts show the daily average, median, minimum and maximum recorded time between two blocks and the daily average, median, minimum and maximum transactions done in a block on Polygon, Flow, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism and Ethereum networks respectively in the past 30 days.

We can see that for all the networks, the average, median and minimum time between two blocks and transactions in a block are very close to each other whereas the maximum time between two blocks and transactions in a block are very far.

This suggests that the maximum values are outliers are do not happen consistently.

The only exception is transactions in a block on Optimism network where the average, median, minimum as well as maximum transactions are 1.

    Summary:

    • The average, Minimum and Maximum time between blocks on Polygon is 2.27 seconds, 2 seconds and 25 seconds respectively.
    • The average time between blocks on Polygon is less than Ethereum but greater than Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism and Flow.
    • ~72 transactions are done in a block in Polygon on average
    • The average transactions done in a block on Polygon are higher than Flow, Arbitrum and Optimism but lower than Solana and Ethereum.
