What does a Daily Active User look like on Osmosis? First, plot out how many DAUs there are on Osmosis. For this exercise, consider a DAU would be any wallet transacting on Osmosis a majority of days every week. Once you have the DAUs, what does their activity look like? Do they LP more or swap more? How often do they transfer tokens into Osmosis? Where are these transfers coming from?

    Introduction:

Osmosis (OSMO) is an automated market maker protocol (AMM) for the ATOM ecosystem. Osmosis was inspired by Balancer and Uniswap and wants to provide tools that go beyond traditional token swaps and offer users DeFi functionality for a cross-chain world. For example, developers can build customized AMMs with sovereign liquidity pools and users can launch liquidity pools with unique parameters like bonding curves and multi-weighted asset pools. That means a liquidity pool does not always have to follow a 50:50 distribution between its assets but can be customized according to the wishes of the party setting up the pool.

Osmosis's vision is to build a cross-chain native DEX that connects to all Cosmos ecosystem chains. Later, it plans to expand to non-IBC chains like Ethereum and chains similar to Bitcoin. In this fashion, Osmosis will transfer its unique customizability like custom-curve AMMs, dynamic adjustments of swap fees, and multi-token liquidity pools beyond blockchains in the Cosmos ecosystem.

    Methodology:

    • First we will plot the weekly number of active users, active swappers, active liquidity providers, active senders and active receivers respectively where any user with transactions (of respective category) in 4 or more days in that week will be counted as active.

    • Then we will identify users who have transactions in 4 or more days in every week since their 1st transaction.

      \

    • Next we will look at whether the active users identified above LP more or swap more.

      \

    • Finally we will look at how often do they transfer tokens into Osmosis and identify where these transfers are coming from. (We will only consider transfers not originating from Osmosis and assume that transfers are from their own wallets on other networks for this purpose).

    • The above charts show the weekly number of active users, active swappers, active liquidity providers, active senders and active receivers respectively.
    • The number of active users reached a peak of 41.82K users in week starting 21st March 2022. After June 13th 2022, number of users has been stable between 12K - 14K.
    • For all types of transactions, the users have been increasing and reached a peak in February 2022 after which they started declining. Since June 13th 2022, the weekly number of users have been largely stable.

    • The above charts show the swap and LP activity of the active users identified above.
    • Out of 326 users, 264 users have more swaps than LP activity, 19 users have more LP activity than swaps and 43 users have equal swaps and LP activity.
    • Also out of these 326 users, 40 users have not performed any swaps, 202 users do not have any LP activity and 39 users have neither any swaps nor any LP activity.

    • On an average, the active users transfer tokens into Osmosis every 543 minutes (~ 9 hours).
    • For more than 90% of the users, the difference between 2 transfers is less than 1 day (1440 minutes).
    • In terms of origin of transfers into Osmosis, Cosmos is the clear leader with ~13K transfers followed by Juno and Evmos with ~7.2K and ~2.9K transfers.

    • The above charts show the number and addresses of users who have transactions in 4 or more days in every week since their 1st transaction.
    • There are a total of 326 such users.
    • Next we will look at whether these 326 users identified above LP more or swap more, how often do they transfer tokens into Osmosis and where are these transfers coming from
